The UK and US have announced a major commercial pact that will guarantee no tariffs on British drug products being sold in the American market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to boost funding on drugs through the NHS. This commitment secures that import taxes on these crucial exports will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This deal is in response to recent warnings to significantly raise tariffs on patented drug products, with figures discussed as high as double the cost.

"This deal between the UK bolsters the global environment for new treatments and brings long-overdue balance to American-British pharmaceutical trade," an announcement said.

Commercial Impact

Drugs represent one of the the United Kingdom's largest export categories to the America, which is clearly the largest buyer for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data indicate that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK shipped drugs valued at billions to the US. This value made up nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that span.

"This deal protects work, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to become a international leader for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key British Pledges

The deal entails several notable pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new treatments to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to increase total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at fifteen percent. In the past, rebates were more than twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact follows a long-running row between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

The disagreement were exacerbated by claims that American consumers were charged several times more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
