Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
